The "SEHAT Mission"- Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation—is a joint initiative by ICAR and ICMR, aiming to connect agriculture, nutrition, and public health.

What is the News?

Union Health Minister Shri JP Nadda and Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the SEHAT Mission in Delhi. This mission is a collaboration between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It aims to build a framework for "Healthy Food, Healthy Farms and a Healthy India".

What's the Big Idea?

The mission represents a shift from merely treating illness to a more proactive approach focused on prevention. Instead of working in silos, agricultural and health institutions will now collaborate to create science-based, affordable, and effective solutions. The goal is to tackle malnutrition and the rise of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension through better nutrition.

Farm to Plate to Health:

The mission looks at the entire cycle, from farmers' well-being and growing nutritious food, to how that food reaches our plates and impacts our health. It aligns with the broader "One Health" vision, which recognizes the link between human, animal, and environmental health

It will focus on:

1. bio-fortified crops,

2. nutrient-rich food products,

3. integrated farming systems,

4. health and safety measures for farmers,

5. dietary solutions for lifestyle diseases,

6. the ‘One Health’ approach.
