Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has officially written a directive to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, proposing the immediate upgrade of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang, into a full-fledged Unitary University. Located in the industrial heartland of Dhenkanal, IGIT Sarang has long been an elite hub for technical education in Eastern India. The transformation aligns with the state’s current administrative blueprint to transition premier institutions—like Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, and Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR), Bhubaneswar—into self-governing unitary setups. This structural shift will grant the college autonomous powers to design a cutting-edge industry curriculum, establish independent research wings, and introduce new super-specialty engineering streams without external affiliation bottlenecks.
