The Union Government has introduced the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing to lift the maximum Lok Sabha seat cap from 550 to 850.

What is the News?

The Central Government formally tabled The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 alongside the Delimitation Bill, 2026. This historic legislation reverts to the foundational principle of allocating parliamentary seats strictly in proportion to state populations. The bill increases the maximum strength of the Lok Sabha to 850 members (up to 815 representing States and 35 from Union Territories). Consequently, this changes the Lok Sabha to Rajya Sabha seat ratio from 2.2:1 to 3.3:1 and proportionally expands the maximum permissible size of the Union Council of Ministers from 81 to 122 members under Article 75.
