Why in the News?
The Odisha government announced that the state secured the number one position nationally in house completion performance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U 2.0).
Odisha has emerged as the leading state in India in terms of house completion under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U 2.0), highlighting the state’s strong performance in urban housing and welfare implementation. According to the Odisha Housing and Urban Development Department, the state consistently maintained the top national position in PMAY-U 2.0 house completion performance between March 2025 and March 2026.
The achievement reflects Odisha’s growing focus on inclusive urban development and the vision of “Housing for All.” The state government stated that thousands of economically weaker urban families are benefiting from faster implementation of affordable housing projects.
Officials informed that around 24,625 houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 in Odisha since the launch of the scheme in September 2024. Among them, more than 23,000 sites have already been geo-tagged to ensure transparency and proper monitoring of construction activities.
As per official figures released by the government:
1. Foundation work started for more than 3,100 houses
2. Around 2,008 houses were completed by 5 May 2026
3. Remaining projects are currently under different stages of construction
The state government credited the achievement to coordinated efforts between:
1. Housing & Urban Development Department
2. Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)
3. Odisha Urban Housing Mission (OUHM)
4. Field-level implementation agencies
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra directed officials to accelerate pending construction work and ensure timely delivery of houses to eligible beneficiaries.
What is PMAY-U 2.0?
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) is the upgraded version of the Government of India’s flagship affordable housing mission aimed at providing pucca houses to urban poor and middle-class families.
The scheme was launched for the 2024-2029 period after the success of the original PMAY-U mission. The Union Government announced that PMAY-U 2.0 would support housing needs of nearly 1 crore urban households across India.
