Odisha Alters Concessional Thermal Power Policy to Attract ₹30,000 Crore

The Government of Odisha has initiated a massive policy shift in its power sector by aligning its concessional power allocation framework with the Central Government’s guidelines. Under the newly modified policy, newly commissioned thermal power plants in the state will only be required to supply 5% of their total generation capacity at variable charges to the state. This replaces the older, more stringent policy that forced developers to provide 12-14% of their capacity at heavily concessional rates. According to industry experts, this change is projected to pull in investments worth ₹25,000 crore to ₹30,000 crore over the next 6 to 12 months, with power giants like Jindal, Vedanta, and Adani re-evaluating major projects in the state.
